Dr. McCurry feels strongly that his medical skills were given to him for the purpose of serving his fellow man. In keeping with that, he has been on several mission trips for the purpose of serving those in third world countries. Coming from a medical missions upbringing with his parents in the mountain terraces of the Philippines, he had an excellent role model in his Father, Dr. Bill McCurry.
In 1999 Dr. Kevin McCurry and Dr. Bill McCurry, as well as Dr. Ron Williams and his wife Esther Williams, ARNP, responded to the devastation of hurricane Mitch in Nicaragua. They spent a week serving the people of Nicaragua who were displaced to refugee camps. This was a life changing experience for the younger Dr. McCurry.
In 2001 Dr. Kevin McCurry went to Central America again with his then 14 year old daughter, Susan. This trip was to Honduras and coordinated by the Christian Medical and Dental Association, and there Dr. McCurry met Dr. David Stevens who challenged him to consider medical missions in a deeper fashion. As a result of that, the McCurry''s prepared for a longer deployment and elected to go as a family.
Kijabe Hospital in Kenya beckoned and the McCurry''s went to serve for a month in July of 2003. It was a wonderful experience for the entire family, and everyone was able to participate in serving the mission of the hospital. Africa has overwhelming poverty and medical problems, but Kijabe Hospital is a light in the darkness in more ways than one. It was challenging from both medical and personal standpoints. Dr. McCurry hopes to someday return to Kenya again.
It has been some time since his last medical mission trip, but opportunities are being pursued as Dr. McCurry seeks to use his skills in a manner that would best serve his fellow man and God. Dr. McCurry would be more than happy to share his experiences and pictures with any group that would like to know more about medical missions abroad.
